LOCAL FLY FISHING OPPORTUNITIES Richard Stoll Peninsula Outfitters, Poulsbo, Washington   The weather is spectacular and the fishing is great.  The fishing promises to be better than ever this year with numerous angling opportunities.  Following are just a few. Alpine Lakes Alpine lakes are great opportunities that are often over looked and the weather is perfect to get to them.  For we in the West Sound this means those lakes in the Olympic Mountains.  Alpine lake trout fishing is one of the Olympics’ premier recreational pastimes.  Trails into these mountain jewels wander across flowered meadows and pass through shady forests of cedar, fir and hemlock. At trail’s end, trout grow plump on mayflies, midges and other minute delectables.   Some of the hikes to reach these lakes are easier than one may think.  Conversely, there are lakes that are very challenging to get to. There are some great guides to Olympic lakes including Dave Shorett’s “Olympic Mountain Fishing Guide” among others.   Also see: http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/high_lakes/ Lowland Lakes I can’t think of a more pleasurable pastime than basking in one of our local lakes in a float tube.  Some of these lakes are putting out some spectacular fish.  In recent days Teal Lake has given up a number of trout well in excess of twenty inches long.   With our unseasonably warm weather,  the surface waters are getting a bit warm for trout. Use a sinking “I” line is usually best to get to the cooler trout-friendly waters down below.  Another option is to fish the “hatches” early or late for some surface action. Trout Streams Yes, we have those too but not many here in Kitsap County.  Just across the Hood Canal affords some memorable fishing in eastern drainage streams like the middle reaches of the Dungeness, Quilcene, Duckabush, Dosiwallips among a number of others.  For the most part the trails are easy to follow.  While the trout tend not to be large, they are spunky, especially on light gear with small flies. We will be offering a few private Small Stream classes this summer to help you “dial in” this fun, local fishery. Sea Run Cutthroat There is not enough that can be said about this local beach fishery.  These guys are here nearly year round.  They much prefer the shallow waters near our shorelines oat nearly all public access areas such as state and local parks, road ends, and the like. As we progress throughout the summer, these aggressive trout will be mixed with the incoming salmon, making for fun days on the salt! Grab your fast action 6wt, handle these local treasures with care, and enjoy a fun day on the beach! Salmon July is the onset of spectacular beach salmon fishing.  A few pink salmon, aka humpies, are already starting to show off of norther points like Point Wilson, Point Marrowstone, and Point no Point.  Their numbers will steadily increase through July and into August as they move into the inner Puget Sound.  Likewise, silver salmon, aka Coho, are showing in droves off the coast of Washington with some already entering the Straights of San Juan de Fuca.  Expect them to show off the same points as the Pinks mid to late July going through October.  Both Pinks and coho are coincident and are fished for the same way off local beaches.  My book “Fly Fishing Inshore Saltwaters for Pacific Salmon”, available in our shop, is definitive on the subject.  Likewise consider attending one of our beach fishing seminars. Still not sure or need some advice and direction?  Stop in the shop.  We are here to assist.
